Counselors are employed in different industries; there are health counselors, insurance counselors, school counselors and counselors specializing in various other fields. It is essential to acquire a degree in the subject they intend to deal in. A counselor must also possess excellent communication skills, good interpersonal skills and the ability to convince/ motivate others.
Whichever field these professionals are employed in their main job duty is to advice and counsel employees or clients on the subject they deal in. Besides this there are a number of other tasks these employees are required to handle; few of these are mentioned below in detail:
- Counselors are required to speak to their clients and gain knowledge about their likes/ dislikes and other related information. They are required to understand the client’s aspirations and the issues being faced by him. This is the initial step involved in counseling a client. Counselors are required to be very attentive while the clients are providing information about themselves.
- Counselors are required to suggest ways in which the clients can cope up with the situation. They need to stay in constant touch with the client in order to figure out whether the suggested methods are helping him or not. In case the client does not find those methods satisfactory enough and they do not help him in a positive manner the counselor needs to look for other ways to handle the situation.
- Counselor is required to ensure that the counseling sessions are interactive enough and that the client does not hesitate in sharing any information with the counselor. He is also required to ensure that the client’s information is kept confidential.
- Counselor is required to maintain a record of the details of the advice or counseling required by the client and the suggestions provided by him. He also needs to record the impact of his suggestions and how quick it was.
