An oncologist is a qualified doctor with superior training who specialises in diagnosing cancer. With his advanced education in detecting cancer, he possesses skills required to diagnose, treat and handle cancer. Many oncologists treat a specific type of cancer while few specialise in the treatment of more than one. There are various duties of an oncologist.   • An oncologist is required to know and study the patients’ history (if any) and plan the future treatment accordingly.
  • An oncologist must specialise in reading the symptoms of the patient to understand the kind of treatment required.
  • An oncologist must conduct tests, biopsies, physical exams, evaluations and collect other relevant samples and information to be able to plan a relevant and efficient treatment for the patient.
  • An oncologist needs to discuss the possible options of treatment procedures with the patient and his family.
  • An oncologist must discuss the costs involved in the chosen line of treatment. This will help the family to make arrangements on time.
  • If the treatment involves surgery, the oncologist must explain the risk involved to the patient and his family. Enabling them to make a fair decision.
